Evidence of Work
In this project we were trying to answer the question of how we could use parts of someone's gait to identify certain types of people. Some of these parts could include height, length, and other measurements of a person's body. This project was a great introduction to engineering analysis, which is the use of scientific and analytic principles to find the parts and functions of a system. Gait analysis is the study of human motion, which is used for many things, including increasing running speed for athletes or for studying ways to help people walk with conditions that burden their ability.
For our experiment, my group and I used accelerometers to collect data. We entered our data into spreadsheets with 3 variables, X Y and Z. X was our lateral velocity, Y was our vertical velocity, and Z was our longitudinal velocity. We could use this data to graph acceleration versus time and see if it could be used to compare and contrast a person's gait. After looking over our data, we decided to instead focus on finding an equation that could be used to find a person's height based on the number of steps they took for a certain distance. Our graphs and data can be found below.

Velocity: The speed of something in a given direction. We measured the velocity in M/S/S for our time versus acceleration graphs.
Gait Analysis: The study of a humans gait, or movements while in motion. We studied our own gaits to give ourselves data to find an equation to find height based on steps over a certain distance. Engineering analysis: The breaking down of an object, system, problem or issue into its basic elements to get at its essential features and their relationships to each other and to external elements. We broke down the different parts of a person's gait to find out which parts could help us answer questions. Accelerometer: A device that measures the physical acceleration experienced by an object. We used this device to collect our data for our experiment. |

I felt like my group and I worked together very well. We were able to record data quickly so that we could begin observing what the data actually told us. The only problem that we ran into was inconsistency in our data because of settings resetting on the accelerometer. Two new things that I learned was how the accelerometer worked and how to interpret data on spreadsheets. By the end of the project I was able to use the device well to produce the data to record and analyze on google sheets. Two things I did well were organizing data and knowing how to transfer information from device to device. I was able to navigate through the data and be able to produce it in a neat orderly fashion that was presentable. Two things that I can work on are creating graphs and finding equations. I was having a hard time creating graphs with multiple pieces of data in them. Over time this will get easier once I have more experience with spreadsheets.
